The fix also applies to fifties-style QDLs, and likely all Royal portables from that general time frame. Here's the pictures I took, showing the problem and solution:Įdit: Who else has one (or more :-P ) of these machines? I'm noticing many posts about them, I'm getting curious. I gently bent back the bent stop with a flathead screwdriver, and the typewriter is back to normal! This was creating wear, and possibly damage, on the side of the escapement teeth. I came to the conclusion that the stop holding the lever has been bent by a force on the carriage, against the escapement.īecause of the misalignment, the space mechanism was pushing back the escapement to hold it in place before it would advance when the key was released. I tilted back the machine to investigate, and found that the part holding the escapement is a lever, which was resting against a stop. The same was happening with the space bar. The first thing I noticed was that pressing any (printing) key caused the carriage to move slightly right before releasing the key caused it to move one space left.

Today, having access to it, I took my 1946 QDL out of its case to investigate. This led me to believe that this could be true, as the non-functional backspace was only a symptom of another problem. The carriage was sitting too far left, causing the backspace lever to miss the escapement tooth it should be pushing backwards. I had previously determined that my backspace problem was not actually caused by the backspace mechanism.
